Decking Tile Underlay

Decking Underlay

Protecting your existing balcony/flat-roofing surface.

If installing Decking Tiles onto any of the surfaces listed below, you may wish to consider the use of a protective underlay.

  1 Bitumen.
2 Roofing Felt.
3 Particularly uneven surfaces.
4 Other single ply membranes

Some bitumen and roofing felts can soften at temperature, at which point there is the possibility that the tile base could sink into the softened surface, compromising the waterproof membrane. If you believe that your bitumen or roofing felt may do this, or that your existing surface is particularly light weight i.e. not originally designed to be walked upon; then we would strongly advise the use of a protective underlay.

Our underlay is a porous recycled rubber product that is simply rolled out and cut to size. It is available in various thicknesses from 3mm to12mm and has been specifically designed for the protection of roofing membranes. It also offers the following additional benefits.

  1 Excellent sound insulation. (6mm thickness +)
2 Easy installation
3 Vibration reduction
4 Adds a pleasant cushioned feel when walking on the deck.

For particularly uneven surfaces the rubber underlay –especially in thicknesses over 6mm -can help smooth out dips and variations in height. Depressions can then also be packed out under the matting as required.

Note:
1. The rubber underlay is not suitable for use in areas where there is standing water. Free drainage of the surface is essential as standing water may cause the underlay to swell, potentially lifting the tiles.
2. For areas where heavy footfall is anticipated –to include stairs and porch/entrance ways -we would recommend 6mm thickness and above.
3. For areas of very high usage we offer an industrial grade underlay, available in various thicknesses –please contact us for further information.

Important installation information

When installing the underlay allow 10mm expansion gap between each strip of underlay as well as any vertical surfaces i.e. walls.
